About TFA’s
Advisory Program
Through the advisory program
the students will each be assigned to a staff member or teacher
who will “follow” them through their high school career. In
elementary through fifth grade the primary teacher is also the
advisor.
In this way each student will:
- Be
known consistently by one adult.
- Have an
adult mentor who will serve as a liaison between the student and
student’s parents and teacher.
- Have a
place of safety to go to where academic, social, spiritual, and
emotional issues can be addressed.
What takes place during advisory times (each day from
8:00-8:45am)?
Possible
activities might include, but are not limited to
- Centers
for homework, portfolio typing, journaling, and other academic
work.
-
One-on-one conferencing re: academic/behavioral issues, goal
setting, and other pertinent issues.
- Group
discussion and/or other group bonding activities, i.e.
relationship with peers or family members, as well as moral
issues, and other concerns of the student.
- Large
group fun activities, i.e. birthday and other celebrations,
sharing snacks and conversation, and other ideas as students and
advisors deem appropriate.
Intended
Outcomes:
-
Students feel a sense of connectedness within a small group.
-
Students feel empowered academically and socially, i.e. improved
peer interaction, confidence/ability to self-advocate, and
greater success in academics.
-
Students have the opportunity to get directions on projects,
relationships, vocation, and other concerns.
-
Students have fun together and build positive peer
relationships.
-
Accountability/communication between parents, school, and
student.
